NEW YORK, N.Y. — Taylor Fritz opened his 2025 US Open campaign with a straight-sets victory over fellow American Emilio Nava on Sunday, August 24, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Fritz, the No. 4 seed in the men's singles draw, defeated the wildcard entry 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 on Louis Armstrong Stadium. After a competitive opening set, Fritz found his rhythm and took control of the match to secure his place in the second round.

Fritz Finds His Rhythm

The opening set proved to be the most competitive portion of the match. Nava, ranked No. 101 at the time, challenged Fritz with powerful groundstrokes and an effective serve. The two Americans stayed close throughout the set before Fritz earned a crucial break late to take it 7-5.

Despite Nava's strong start, Fritz gradually gained control. The fourth seed improved his returning and took advantage of opportunities on Nava's serve, winning the second set 6-2.

Fritz continued to apply pressure in the third set, breaking Nava to establish an early lead. He maintained his advantage through the closing games to finish the match in straight sets, avoiding the need for a fourth set.

Building on Last Year's Run

The victory was an important first step for Fritz, who entered the tournament looking to build on his impressive run to the 2024 US Open final. That appearance made him the first American man to reach the tournament's singles final since Andy Roddick in 2006.

Fritz ultimately finished as the runner-up in 2024, losing to Jannik Sinner in the championship match. Returning to New York as the fourth seed, Fritz entered the 2025 tournament with the opportunity to make another deep run on one of tennis's biggest stages.

The pressure of competing at a home Grand Slam was something Fritz acknowledged after his first-round victory. He explained that nerves are common at the beginning of a major tournament, but confidence builds as players settle into competition.

Looking Ahead

For Fritz, the opening-round victory provided a solid foundation for another US Open campaign. After reaching the final the previous year, the American entered the 2025 tournament with high expectations and a chance to continue his pursuit of a Grand Slam title.
